Creative Thinking: Invisible Cities

This is the illustration I did for Creative Thinking class. We had to read four paragraphs of excerpt from Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, then picked one city we like and make an imagery to represent this city. I picked "Zora", based on this following excerpt, which was translated from Italian.

Cities and Memory 4 - Zora

Beyond six rivers and three mountain ranges rises Zora, a city that no one, having seen it, can forgot. But not because, like other memorable cities, it leaves ab unusual image in your recollections. Zora has the quality of remaining in your memory point by point, in its succession of streets, of houses along the streets, and of doors and windows in the houses, though nothing in them possesses a special beauty of rarity. Zora's secret lies in the way your gaze runs over patterns following one another as in a musical score where not a note can be altered or displaced. The man who knows by heart how Zora  is made, if he is unable to sleep at night, can imagine he is walking along the streets and he remembers the order by which the copper clock follows the barber's striped awning, then the fountain with the nine jets, the astronomer's glass tower, the melon vendor's kiosk, the statue of the hermit and the lion, the Turkish bath, the cafe at the corner, the alley that leads to the harbor. This city which cannot be expunged from the mind is like an armature, a honeycomb in whose cells each of us can place the things he wants to remember: names of famous men, virtues, numbers, vegetable and mineral classifications, dates of battles, constellations, parts of speech. Between each idea and each point of the itinerary an affinity or a contrast can be established, serving as an immediate aid to memory. So the world's most learned men are those who have memorized Zora.

But in vain I set out to visit the city: forced to remain motionless and always the same, in order to be more easily remembered, Zora has languished, disintegrated, disappeared. The earth has forgotten her.

Heroes

Sam painted this piece for Disney Store in New York and it sold quickly. I wish we could keep the original; I only got the color-photocopy though.

Creative Thinking: make a sign

(Help me go home.)"。

I know what you think.
Ask me.

(Limits are possibilities.)

(Translation is coming soon.)

Epcot

Lamb_chopShrimp_barbie 接著我們到澳洲去吃烤羊排
Grilled Lamb Chop with Caramelized Onions和烤蝦Shrimp on the Barbie,中間Sam還跑去墨西哥買Quesadilla和啤酒,不過我認為墨西哥菜在佛羅里達到處都是,不稀奇,所以就沒拍照,也不在此介紹了。

New England Crab Cake and Barley Salad也是超美味的。

Maple Glazed Salmon with Arugula and Roasted Corn也非常美味。

The Art of Winnie the Pooh

10 Simple Pleasures

I haven't played blog tag for a long time. But I like this one from Joy. So here is my list (not in particular order).

1. shopping at Eslite bookstore(誠品書店)- this is one thing that I miss the most about Taipei. I love the smell of Eslite, it mixes paper, coffee and some kind of indescribable atmosphere. I like to walk around and listen to the sound of flipping pages. I like to meet friends at Eslite; and I like it opens 24 hours so I always have a place to go in sleepless nights.

2. a Starbucks coffee in the morning- my day doesn't start until I have a cup of nice hot coffee.

3. eating at nightmarket- this is another thing I miss about Taiwan. I like to have nightsnacks at nightmarket. Stinky tofu(臭豆腐), oyster noodles(蚵仔麵線), Lu Wei(meat or vegi stewed with sauce and strained before serving)(滷味), grilled sausages(烤香腸)...etc. I guess it's time to visit Taiwan.

4. reading in bed with him before sleep- this is a peaceful and cozy moment in a day.

5. patting and talking to my dog- she always makes me smile.

6. creating things- when I am writing, drawing or scrapbooking, I feel fulfilled and happy about my life.

7. watching a good movie.

8. waking up in a chilly rainy morning- I think that's because I hate the hot, muggy weather of Florida. I like the feeling of rainy morning, it reminds me of Taipei. It makes me feel tranquil and romantic.

9. buying Moleskines- or go to bookstore and just look at them. Open my Moleskines and smell the freshness of the paper.

10. laughing with my sister- we can laugh about every little thing when we are together. I guess I really miss home.
