One thing that people should know about chopsticks

There is one thing that always bothers me when I work at the Japanese restaurant in America. I've seen many people(non-Asian) like to stick their chopsticks into the bowl of rice. If one's familiar with Asian cultures, he should know that that is a very bad luck.

I don't know about other Asian countries; but in Chinese custom, when someone dies, his family will place a bowl of rice in front of the coffin, with a pair of chopsticks stuck in it. Sometimes they stick incense, too.

Whenever I saw customers doing that, I really really have strong desires to advise them changing this bad habit. It's not only because of bad luck, also it is very rude and bad manner. You wouldn't do the same thing with fork, according to etiquette; then you shouldn't do that with chopsticks.

The proper way to place chopsticks is not much different from silverware. The best way is to place them on the chopsticks holder, if you have one. Or you can simply put them flat down on the table. No matter what, never ever stick chopsticks into your rice.

冰湯匙

我的冰箱裡總是儲藏著一支冰湯匙。

因為愛哭；因為跟情人吵架時，常哭著睡著；因為睡前哭泣的結果，是第二天早上會有一雙核桃眼。

在雜誌上看過的小偏方，讓眼睛快速消腫的方法，是用冰的湯匙敷在眼睛上。試過幾次，果然見效，可以讓核桃眼瞬間消腫。

有一陣子，我常常需要用到冰湯匙，於是在冰箱裡放了兩支，以備不時之需。後來好久不用了，幾乎已經忘了有那麼一支冰湯匙的存在。前兩天，不小心又讓自己哭泣，很擔心第二天無法出去見人。後來忽然想起了那支冰湯匙，於是可以很放心地，讓眼淚盡情地奔流進枕頭裡，讓傷心的情緒完完全全地排泄出來。

有了這麼一支冰湯匙，就像有了一個可以讓自己軟弱的理由，受傷的時候，不再需要假裝堅強。因為我知道，哭泣過後，我又可以漂漂亮亮地面對世界。
